Speed and Agility Training

Whatever the sport, quickness, agility and speed are absolute needs.

Acceleration (quickness of first steps), which refers to the initial steps and the ability to rapidly reach full speed once the decision to move quickly had been made.

Most sports require quickness to be used repeatedly, more than they require speed.  Most athletes need to cover about 5-15 yards repeatedly, and the more separation you can gain from your opponents in those few steps, the better.  Even a foot or so of separation can make you a more effective and dominant player.

Agility is the ability to change direction.  You have to read the play, make a decision to change direction and then actually stop and make the change happen safely and quickly.  It's pretty common to have to make hundreds of direction changes (or cuts) during a game!

Speed involves getting toward your top velocity.   In a straight sprint, most athletes continue to increase their speed for up to 30-40 yards.  Sprinters can continue to gain speed for 70 yards or more.  In most team sports, it's unusual to reach top speed more than once or twice in a game.

Speed training is a foundation of training for most sports.  Even though top speed is rarely required or reached in a game, the higher your top speed, the easier it is to continue to move at a fast pace.  If you can run 16 mph at best, and the game occurs at 15.5 mph, your effectiveness will decrease quickly as you fatigue and naturally slow down from that 16 mph best.  But if you can run 20 mph, well, the game is easier.

When you add all the stops, starts, skills demands and the long distances covered at low speeds in team sports, it's obviously fatiguing!  Knowing how to  move efficient - to have good form - is a key to keeping your energy level higher than your opponent's, and this needs to be trained as well.

Learning the how-to behind all this is complex.  Our staff members have played, coached, and trained at the highest levels of sports.   We understand the most sophisticated cutting edge research in the sport performance world.  We do the complex part and give you what YOU need to improve so you can focus on the training!
